A young mother and her child in Ha Giang Province, Vietnam
In Hmong communities in Viet Nam, we found both boys and girls staying in school longer – thanks in part to government stipends – and aspiring to employment.
Viet Nam has closed and even reversed gender gaps in primary, secondary and tertiary schooling (World Bank, 2011). But at the same time, there are limited work opportunities and the vast majority of young people live similar lives to their parents, marrying in their late teens and farming.
