In Phulpingkot we have just one sub-healthpost and many women do not come for their regular check-up or their antenatal care (ANC) check-ups.
The reason that some women do not come is the landscape. They may have to walk three or four hours from home to reach the healthpost, crossing many steep slopes. In Phulpingkot, PHASE Nepal has set up two Outreach Clinics (ORCs) in different areas of the village. We staff the clinic on Mondays and Thursdays in one area and once a month in the furthest location. In the past, women would not have any check-ups during pregnancy and miscarriages and stillborn children were common. Now, our outreach into the community means that more women receive ANC and the situation is improving.
