Through my project 'Out of the Frame' I want to give another perspective on veiled women in Tunisia. I want to show how veiled women are more than just religious – which I consider something personal. They can be artistic and active. A veiled woman can be an artist, she can speak through her camera, she can sing like other women, she can play the piano, the guitar or the drums, she can paint. She can simply express herself through art. Photography in Tunisia before the revolution was done by those who are specialists in fine arts and you rarely saw someone with a digital reflex camera and more importantly, female photographers. In just the last few years however, you have started hearing about photography clubs – though they are centered in the capital – and photography projects, galleries and workshops in partnership with foreign organisations. And we definitely need that exchange of ideas and perspectives to back up and enrich our knowledge.
