Prabha, Nepal

This lady gave birth in Kathmandu. She had an episiotomy, but the stitches were put in by a trainee doctor and she had some problems with infection after returning home. We were told by one of the local Female Community Health Volunteers about the delivery and visited her in her home. We identified the infection and were able to help her so that she made a full recovery without returning to Kathmandu.

Postnatal care is very important to both mother and child as there are many problems that can endanger life in the week after delivery. There should be a check-up within 24 hours, after three days and after seven days. In many areas in Nepal, it is not common for women to go to the healthpost after giving birth. Now that we visit women in their homes, many more women in Phulpingkot are receiving this vital care.
