Asmita, Nepal

In our community we give too little priority to the needs of pregnant women and young mothers. As a result, they may suffer from malnutrition or exhaustion. But if they have a problem, there is the belief that it is caused by witchcraft and a traditional healer is called. Because of this, both mothers and children in Tamang communities often do not benefit from the maternal health services provided in the area.

In our community, we still have the tradition of delivering children in the home and it is usual to call a traditional healer to attend the birth. People will take their children to the healthpost for vaccines, but because of tradition they will not take them if they have a health problem.
