Macaria cf. regulata - Lesser Maple Spanworm Moth / Mariposa-do-Verme-de-Tronco (Fabricius, 1775)

Wingspan Omega

Description: I came blind into this, but quickly found out the family, subfamily and tribe. I found many similar genera, such as Semiothisa, Macaria, Chiasma and Psamatodes (for this last one see the link in this text). I came to a halt and decided to send it to INSETOLOGIA for help on going further. Using the words of Cesar of INSETOLOGIA, there is plenty of confusion regarding moths in the superfamily Geometroidea, family Geometridae, subfamily Ennominae and tribe Macariini and there is nothing that can be done besides sit and wait for the confusion to be undone. "FUNET" is undoubtedly one of the best sources to find out synonyms and in the Semiothisa genus page ("http://www.nic.funet.fi/pub/sci/bio/life/insecta/lepidoptera/ditrysia/geometroidea/geometridae/ennominae/semiothisa/") at this moment, we have the following information:

"This genus is in total disarray now. Confusion on what should be moved into Macaria or Chiasmia or somewhere else?", with the "somewhere else" possibly regarding this: (""http://www.discoverlife.org/mp/20q?search=Psamatodes+abydata")

On the Macaria genus page ("http://www.nic.funet.fi/pub/sci/bio/life/insecta/lepidoptera/ditrysia/geometroidea/geometridae/ennominae/macaria/") there are specimens similar to this, so it's sensible to call it Macaria. ESALQ has a virtually identical one, identified as Macaria regulata ("http://www.lea.esalq.usp.br/me/fotos/Lepidoptera/Geometridae/Ennominae/3562.jpg").

This being known, it is sensible to call this, at least for now, Macaria regulata. The diet or lack of of the adult Macaria regulata is unknown to me. I do not know the diet of the larvae either, but I believe they feed on Acer sp. ("maple") (Sapindales: Sapindaceae: Hippocastanoideae).

Feeding type: Larvae are phytophagous (possibly poliphytophagous) but I'm unaware what is the host plant or host plants of Macaria regulata, although I believe they feed on Acer sp. ("maple") of the order Sapindales, family Sapindaceae and subfamily Hippocastanoideae. The diet or lack of of the adults is unknown to me.
