Camping at the base of the Cerro Negro volcano, Nicaragua
The Cerro Negro volcano (2338 ft), not too far from León, Nicaragua, is the youngest volcano in Central America and that is also still active. The previous erruption occurred in 1999. Camping here can be quite an experience, the nearest National Park Ranger's hut is miles away and the volcanic ash environment is almost as if staying on the moon. The night we spent here featured a heavy tropical thunderstorm and the sky was full of lightening. As can be seen, any form of proper shelter is completely non-existent, so one can only remain in the tents and hope that all will be OK.... an exciting, but somewhat frightening experience....
