Goldener Saal, Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany
The Goldener Saal (golden Hall) is Augsburg's Town Hall's ceremonial room and highly impressive.... After the original Goldener Saal was destroyed in the bombings of the Second World War in 1944, at first no effort was taken to restore the room in its orginal and splendid manner and a much more simplified room was built instead. Around 1980, however, the vast project was undertaken to restore the golden Hall in its former glory, for the celebration of the Augsburg's 2000 years anniversary. Based on pictures and drawings from before the bombings, a beautiful restoration has taken place. Costing millions, and taking years, it is almost if the original Hall never was destroyed. Originally, the interior was desgined by Johann Matthias Kager in 1643, and the murals and coffered ceilings of this room belong to the very best of the German Renaissance.
