Modern design at 'Münchner Freiheit' U Bahnhof, Munich, Germany
The U Bahnhof (undergroundstation) of 'Münchner Freiheit' ('Freedom of Munich) is an example of the increased awareness that functionality and art and design can go together...hence, more and more underground stations in Munich are now being renovated and 'spiced up' in aesthetic terms....a really good development in my eyes, even though it will take years before most stations will be refurbished. The 'Münchner Freiheit' U Bahn Station has undergone a 'face lift' (in 2008-2009) and now features blue lighting, yellow walls and a lot of mirrors....in my opinion quite a successful design!
The name of the station, 'Münchner Freiheit' is to honour the work of the local anti-Nazi resistance in World War II. In 1945 the resistance group 'Freiheitsaktion Bayern' seised control of two Munich radio towers and began broadcasting anti-Nazi propaganda. The square above the current station was originally known as 'Feilitzsch Platz' but was renamed to 'Münchener Freiheit' to honour their work.
