Byzantine time at Άγιος Παντελεήμων, Пантелеймонов, Saint Panteleimonos, Mount Athos

This picture of the Panteleimonos Monsatery, located on Mount Athos, was taken at 15:25 Greek Time. The clock on the belltower however point out a different time: 18:25; this is because time on Mount Athos follows Byzantine time. Mount Athos has followed this method of timekeeping for centuries and it is now virtually the only place in the world where this still happens. This means that the day begins at sunset....something to get used to for the visitors! In any case, Panteleimonos is a Russian Orthodox monastery and is the largest monastery on the peninsula, in terms of size, but not population.
