Milky Way over the Portland Head Light
Forecasts were favorable for the new moon this weekend (well, the new moon was Thursday), and I had been toying with the idea of venturing out to see if I could capture the Milky Way somewhere close to home. Unfortunately, there aren't many dark sky areas in southern New England. Moe and I had been chatting about a possible Maine shoot after work last night, but traffic out of Boston after work is murder, and I was feeling pretty beat, so I wasn't optimistic about taking the trip.
I got home from work and decided to lie down for a quick nap. Forty-five minutes later I gave Moe a shout and said screw it, I'd make a drive. Two hours after that and we're exploring the coastline around the Portland Head Light, searching for good south-facing comps. We decided on a nice dry section of rock safely away from the incoming tides and began an awesome 90-minute night shoot. Came away with a bunch of stuff I like, but I think this is my favorite comp of the night.
Hit up a great local sandwich joint called Nosh for some grub and a cup of coffee, and I was on the road back home, finally getting into bed a bit after 3:00am. Worth it.
Side note, hey, look at that. Flickr finally made their maps less awful. Bravo.
