Ship Portrait - "USS Texas"

The old dreadnaught, USS Texas, and the San Jacinto Monument. One of the last of the old "Dreadnaught" class of battleships. Built in 1915. Served in WWI and WWII. Now a museum situated on the south side of the Houston Ship Channel just east of Houston. The oblisk in the background is the San Jacinto Monument, built in the depression to keep people working and, of course, to commemorate the battle of San Jacinto, in which our fair city's namesake defeated a much larger force of Mexican soldiers to bring about (eventually) the falling away of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California from nominal Mexican control. The star on the oblisk has its own story. The plume of smoke on the left is from an Al-Qaida aircraft carrier that came within range of the main battery (just testing to see if anyone would read all this stuff). :-)
