A Brief Moment in Time

I owe this shot to my good friend Kenny Mullen. Story below👇

5 years ago Kenny and I were driving some backroads when he yelled “stop”. I didn’t see anything close by, so I asked what was up. Kenny replied “way out there in the distance!”. I scanned around the hills and couldn’t see anything, but then finally I saw it… We proceeded to get some memorable shots with our big lenses

Fast forward through the years and I’ve stopped to check this big glass comp many, many times (at least 30+). But it was never as good as when we first scored it

Deep down I knew that if the perfect conditions intersected this comp it could become magical. So, I stayed my course, and checked it often, but nothing much ever came of it

Then finally during this recent stretch-run of storms it all came together

I noticed the conditions were in the ball park one morning, so I got my 700mm ready, set up, and waited

But the clouds kept holding and very little light was getting through. After about 45 minutes I was about to give up… but then I noticed a dapple spotlight to the south of target moving in the direction I needed it to. I crossed my fingers and waited. Sure enough it intersected the comp perfectly, even providing a magical virga backdrop as it passed through. But just as quickly as it intersected, it was gone. The moment literally lasted a few seconds

I knew the moment I pressed the trigger that I had captured something amazing. This has now become one of my top 3 favorite shots I’ve ever captured up to this point

Thank you Kenny! Without your keen awareness I might have never seen the potential
