pandanus

the leaves of a pandanus are attached to the trunk in a spiral formation

it has a fibrous round fruit that looks a little like a pineapple (inedible, unless you are desperate) and aerial prop roots

there are many different varieties and it's native region includes Australia, South Pacific Islands and Hawaii. It's also called screwpine

this wasn't an easy pic to take because the leaves are sharp, long and usually dirty - it took me nearly a year to come across a good one
