Books read in June - 8 this time!
1. Liked: This is the 4th I've read (part 2 of no.3) and it is much improved on the one before. Gripping, exciting, stuff actually happens.
Disliked: but someone PLEASE be brave enough to edit GRRM a bit more judiciously.
2. Liked: it was easy to read, and not awful. Not great literature but I didn't expect that.
Disliked: you need a strong stomach for all the beatings that are dished out.
3. Liked: er .... Ah I know, it was VERY cheap to get the kindle version.
Disliked: ok, this is a local author and a first novel so I am loathe to be a bitch BUT I hated it, the style, the story (which was done infinitely better in Behind the Scenes at the Museum), the writing style.
4. Liked: I wasn't at all sure what I would make of this but I loved it. It is quirky, violent, slightly supernatural, and generally a bit weird.
Disliked: again, bring a strong stomach.
5. Liked: the evocation of Russia in the 30s and early 40s; the characters, the writing style.
Disliked: the first third is a little dull but hang on, it's a long book and the last 2 thirds are very good.
6, 7 & 8: Liked: omg, I adored these books!! I didn't expect to because I am sniffy about YA fiction, being an adult and all, but I liked the sound of the storyline (I love future dystopia type things) - and I DEVOURED these books, I was totally gripped. She writes well, the world is nicely written, loved it ALL! (especially Peeta who is a badass and a sweetheart and I think I love him). Some of the lines from Johanna actually made me laugh aloud. And I cried at the end of the 3rd one, haha!
Disliked: ok, I would like them to print an over-18 version (NOT an x-rated version), just one where there is a little more going on - the main 3 characters are 16/17 and 18/19 after all, not tweens. All that kissing, arrgh! Yes it's sweet but, for example, a grown male character in a seedy bar in the town is described as teasing someone, saying how all the women love his kisses. I just don't think he would be saying KISSES in that context. Or, she shares a bed lots of times with a boy and hormones don't kick in? Hmm. (There was an adult version of The Dog in the Nighttime book, with a bit more swearing, that's the sort of thing I mean, not the whole book rewritten or anything.)
And there are times I think Katniss is a pain in the butt but hey, it's a minor thing, and totally appropriate to the plot.
