Even though the student I mentor doesn't need math tutoring, I thought I'd attend some common core math classes just so I can understand how this works. And why. I get it now - common core is all about getting the kids to understand the concept of numbers and how they work. By fifth grade, the kids are doing math the way we all did - but with much better mental math ability.
The dice were so we could roll numbers and then multiply them together using our new skills.
