Hermit Crab (click for info)
At approximately 3cm high including the shell, this amazing little Hermit Crab is just one of the approximately 1,100 species of these decapod crustaceans. Unlike the everyday crabs we see which have hard shells, these have long, soft, spirally curved abdomens which they protect from predators by retracting into a empty seashell which they then carry about as their own. Normally sea snail shells like this one are chosen but anything which they can fit into for protection will do, even hollow pieces of wood or stone. Shells must be changed as the crabs grow so they must live in an area where there is availability. This one was seen scuttling across the sand at Little White Sandy Beach (or Little Sandy Beach) in the Khaolak-Lam Ru National Park, south Khaolak, Thailand.
