Hibiscus Macro (click for info)

This is a study of a beautiful peach coloured Chinese Hibiscus flower - Rosa sinensis - showing in detail the stigmas, style branches, style, anther and filaments. The stigmas (the five red discs at the very end of the style branches) are the first landing zone and entrance to the flower and play a vital role in reproduction. Most stigmas are adapted to trap pollen with hairs, flaps and other surfaces to increase their efficiency and are covered with a waxy, sticky substance. There are several hundred species of this wonderful plant, which belongs to the Mallow family, throughout the world and they are seen in a variety of colours and forms. A tea can be made from its flowers which can be served both hot and cold and is known for its vitamin C content, sharp taste and red colour.
