A New Coat of Paint
A conservator at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, works to painstakingly restore a giant oil painting.
The painting is "Allegory of Justice" by the Dutch painter Gerrit van Honthorst, signed in 1636. It shows Elizabet Stuart, the "Winter Queen" of Bohemia and her 13 children.
According to the sign nearby the piece was so large that they couldn't restore it in their normal facilities so they decided to do the work "in public" where curious museum visitors could watch. The room where the curator was working was separated from the public gallery space by a large glass wall. I thought it was fascinating to watch.
