Hemenway Park - Boulder City

Desert Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis nelsoni). Note that these are wild sheep that are not in any kind of enclosure. They just come to this park for the green grass. They live in the mountains near here. Since 1999 they have been classified as an endangered species. These are all ewes (females) of various ages as exhibited by the length of the horns. Also note that the younger ones have a stripe down their backs that disappears as they reach maturity. Except in mating season they stay in groups of all ewes or all rams.
