Ever since another photographer showed me his picture of Cathedral Lake (which got a 2 page feature on Backpacker Magazine), this place has been on my list. Since we are in the area, and the Tioga Pass is still open, we decided to spend a day hiking there.

The first mile was brutal, but the trail soon leveled out. We passed the still burning Cathedral fire before finally reaching the lake. The next hour was spent scrambling up and down the rock face, trying to find a good vantage point. Finally, we settled on a spot just as the sun was setting. The wind calmed down just before the sun set, giving me a mirror surface. Cathedral lake is truly as beautiful as the picture I saw, well worth the 4-mile hike.
