My recognition about SNS (1/15 2012)
For the latest several years, I have joined too much Social Network Service (SNS). Sometimes I consider about how to use them and how to differentiate each SNS? Today I put each SNS in order on the map to figure out "my" recognition about SNS.
X-axis means how community is closed or opened "for me". Y-axis means how my connection in each community is oriented to the past or the future. In other word, which type of people, who are(already) frineds or potential friends, I mainly focus on in each community?
I do not accept "friend invitaion" from people who have not met, and who work in the same company. Therefore Facebook is the most closed and past oriented community "for me". SOUNDCLOUD and STORIFY are communities which are based on hobby and opinion (becasue I am not a proffesional musician and a journalist). It is high potential to build new connections with same hobby and opinion. Follow & Followed connection is fully opend and free. Therefore I plot them on the top right upper side. Flickr is also hobby based community for me (I am not a proffesional photographer). But I usually post photos about what I ate mainly. Number of people who understand what I eat everyday may be smaller than number of people who understand my music preference. Therefore I plot FLICKR under SOUNDCLOUD and STORIFY. In case of LINKEDIN, I do not accept invitaitons from unknow people basically, but I accept invitations from recruiters on case-by-case basis. And I may accept unknow people who build connection pottencially in the future. Therefore I plot LINKEDIN at the centre. QUORA is an invitation only community but relationship is fully opend. As characteristic of QUORA, which is Q&A community, people interact with unknow people in most case. Therefore I prot QUORA at the left upper side.
