Letter from Ellen Hunter, Meadsfield Hanger, Haslemere, Surrey to E B Pomeroy, Solicitor, Wymondham, Norfolk re her brother Thomas dated 27th November 1892

She writes that her husband Robert Hunter is ill and away from his Office, but she had fortunately found the enclosed letter from her brother Robert Cann Surrey asking for financial help as he and his family are destitute, near starvation and need money for rent, dated 24th November 1892. He had been looking for work and had only earned Shillings since Mr Pomeroy (E B Pomeroy a Solicitor in Wymondham, Norfolk) has sent £2 to him. She enclosed 10 shillings asking Pomeroy to send to Thomas. Her husband was to ill to deal with the matter and had told Thomas that that he would not pay any attention to any further applications to him.

 

Ellen Cann born 1851, Carlton Rode married Robert Hunter on the 19th May 1877 at Wimbledon, St Mary, Surrey. Robert Hunter born 1844 a Solicitor for the General Post Office and Co-founder of the National Trust. Robert died in 1913 and Ellen in 1932.

 

Thomas Cann born 1855, Carleton Rode, Norfolk was the son of Samuel Thomas Cann and Martha Elizabeth Stannard. A sailor he married Emma Barnard in 1879 at NSW Australia. By 1891 they were living at 69 Ellerslie Road. By 1901 working as a Butcher he and his wife and children were living at 9 Kildonan Road, Clapham. He died in 1933.
