This is a wonderful wartime issue of Life magazine from June 8, 1942. The cover photograph and story (Nurses' Aide) "After Pearl Harbor the American Red Cross asked for 100,000 nurses' aides. Among the first to answer the call was Miss Lorraine Ames, a 22-year-old San Francisco girl who had previously attended Bennett School in Millbrook, N.Y. and the Sacred Heart Convent in Menlo Park, Calif., but had never done more than "two days of work" her life.
