The darkest and thickest smoke (pitchblack) will be altered in the whitest fairy tale smoke, simply by putting one or two pipes in the top of the chimney, just under the rim on the inside.
And through those pipes they blow, under high pressure, super heated condensed steam, that is made elswhere on the plant in a special machine.
If that machine fails, they stop the plant / factory until it works again.
But there are large filters as well though, doing a good job in cleansing the smoke of dust particles.
Also NOx, SO2 and carbonic acid are neutralized.
But CO2 remains a (big) problem.
