Snow cover and sea ice in the polar regions

This image gives a side-by-side view of snow and sea ice in both polar regions on January 1, 2019. The observations come from NASA’s Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) satellite. This image shows not just opposite poles but also opposite seasons: winter in the Arctic and summer in the Antarctic. This is a still image from an animation by NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio. Credit: Trent L. Schindler/NASA SVS
