Medieval Arpadian age church, Ják. Explored #58

Ják is one of the most significant settlements in western Hungary, in the vicinity of the town of Szombathely. The ancient, Medieval village is located in the centre of a hilly area. The settlement's name first appears in a document from 1211, but it may be of much earlier origin.

The church of St George is the most complete Romanesque Church in Hungary. It was originally built as the church of a St. Benedictian Monastery from 1214 to 1256.

The building was erected on the top of a mound, so the twin towers of the church can be seen from a great distance. The three naves and three apses are formed in a basilica structure. Columnar capitals are sculpured by plant and some animal ornamentation. Both outside and inside the church is adorned with rich sculptures. The famous arched entrance of the church can be found below the gable. The statues of Christ and of the twelve apostles are seen in the niches above the entrance. The church is famous for its masterpieces of murals as well, but unfortunately today only some fragments of the old frescos can be seen in the sanctuary and on the wall of the southern church tower.

The St. James Chapel, a rotunda, can be found in front of the facade of the main doorway of the St George church. The chapel (a baptisterium) was built in Romanesque style around 1260 and its present-day form was given to it in the 18th century. Besides the Romanesque twin-windows of the double chapel with a four-foiled floor plan, three Baroque altars are worth studying. It was first the church of the village people, while St George Abbey Church of the Benedictine monks.

Ják, Szt. Györgyről elnevezett román kori apátsági templom és szintén román kori Szent Jakab keresztelőkápolna (rotunda).
