Cambrian Coast Express

A small group of enthusiasts admires Class 25 No. 25061 as she waits to leave Porthmadog with the return journey of the "Cambrian Coast Express" on Sunday 7th August 1977.

Not a very good photo technically - it's a shame about the chimney stacks growing out of the "25" - but there are a couple of points of interest, nonetheless. All the signalling infrastructure seen here - signal box, rodding, and the semaphore signals in the distance - was removed circa 1988 when the Cambrian line was converted to the Radio Electronic Token Block (RETB) system.

The footbridge has since been removed too. And look at the length of the train: there could be as many as twelve vehicles which seems like a terrific load for a humble class 25. 25061 hauled the railtour as far as Machynlleth, then 40128 took charge for the run Gloucester, handing over to 37242 for the final leg to Bristol Temple Meads.
