Why?

We planned a short afternoon walk in the countryside, for which a couple of public footpaths around Kenn looked ideal for exploration. One leads north from Kenn Street, the main road through the village. For about its first 50 metres or so the footpath is shared with a private driveway, at the end of which is a gate, behind which I stood to take this photograph.

Signs had been fixed to the gate advising walkers not to use the public footpath unless absolutely necessary, because of the possibility of spreading Covid-19. As we were reading these signs a man appeared from the door of an adjacent house.

'Are you lost?' he said.

'No, we're just following the footpath ... and photographing the birds,' replied my wife.

'Why?' said the man.

I was dumbfounded by what seemed to me like a completely pointless question. Gauging the situation we retraced our steps to the road and switched to 'Plan B', an alternative footpath that strikes south. This also passes through a farmyard, but our experience there was quite different. Another man appeared from his house as we passed, but he was friendly and showed us how to follow the footpath through his property and beyond.
