The horse funalis, located in the chariots to the left, performed an important job, since the turn they gave to the spina depended on it and it was the most risky maneuver in the race, since it was necessary to block the way to the others participants and get them to fall into the sand.

During the Roman Republic there were two sides or teams, the red, factio russata and the white, factio albata. In the 1st century, the factio prasina, the faction of the greens, and the factio veneta, which corresponded to the blues, were added. They were the four most important and had great weight in the ludi circenses of the Roman world. Each of these teams had in their charioteers true heroes who made wins and earned large sums of money and honours. The Blues and Greens eventually absorbed the other factions throughout the third century. The whites were assimilated to the greens and the reds to the blues.
