Portrait 2 of a Burrowing Owl with a Wet Head at Cape Coral, Florida
Details best viewed in Original Size.
Burrowing Owls are common birds in Cape Coral (Indeed the Burrowing Owl is the city's official bird) and throughout the city, hundreds of burrows provide subjects to domestic and visiting photographers and to mere onlookers. Burrowing Owls are mostly nocturnal and during most of the year can be seen and photographed only during the late evening and/or very early morning. During late April through early June in Southern Florida their burrows fill with growing nestling and these and their parents can be seen and photographed throughout most of the day watching the outside world from near their burrows. It is because they are such easy and appealing subjects that I have photographed them from just about every angle. However, two photographed have escaped me: 1 - Burrowing Owls in flight and 2 - Wet owls after a moderate rain. The hope for this second shot caused me to rush out of the house with my camera and long lens soon after a sudden rain shower. Unfortunately, the Burrowing Owls were not quite as wet as I had hoped for.
