Disregarded

8-23-15 Manhattan, NY. A man holds out a cup while reading a book outside of a Starbucks near Central Park.

I had just spent some time in Central Park walking around and observed this man who had just sat down outside of the Starbucks. The man, holding a nearly empty plastic up, would jiggle the cup as people walked by; not so remarkable. What was different for me was that this man held a book in his lap. Books, the gateway to information, learning, and communication. They are typically a status symbol for it shows that the holder is literate. The simple symbol of the book in the lap changed my perspective on the man's situation and made me wonder as to why he was sitting on the sidewalk. I was impressed that while begging for money, he wasn't just going to spend the day watching time pass by; he was multi-tasking. The facial expressions on the passerby family in this photo also helped to illustrate the general contempt of "street people" in society.
