Granite
Late afternoon on the rocks at Bicheno on Tasmania's east coast. Crappy weather streaming in from the NW.
A significant part of the south-east of the Australian continent is comprised of granitic diorite and the most southeasterly of the exposed batholithic extrusions runs south through Bass Strait from the Mornington Peninsula, through Flinders Island down through the Bay of Fires to the Freycinet Peninsula. A nice, hard protrusion protects the coastline at Bicheno.
Naturally the sea exploits every weakness but even so, the igneous rock weathers extremely slowly, leaving behind beautiful white sand beaches as the quartzite is the last to go. A thin strip of such beach can be seen in Macleans Bay - behind Diamond Island middle left.
