Tiny numbers were Cobblers
86428 ‘Aldaniti’ heads the 1722 Euston to Northampton commuter service on the stormy evening on 4th April 1990.
The locomotive carries the mercifully short-lived miniature numbers applied to InterCity’s locomotive fleet when they received the sector’s ‘Swallow’ livery as seen here. Miniature numbers were applied in 1988 and early 1989, and not surprisingly, were despised by the rail enthusiasts of the day.
Later in 1990 the locomotive had its electric train heating isolated and was renumbered as 86628, a number that it carried for the next 30 years as a (nominally) dedicated freight locomotive. It was withdrawn from service in July 2020, after 54 years in service.
