Springtime in the Wylye Valley

Thirty years before I captured Network Rail's NMT at the same location ( flic.kr/p/2bh1uVk ) I visited Sherrington to shoot the last months of locomotive haulage on the Cardiff to Portsmouth route.

Here 33008 'Eastleigh' heads south on Sunday 10th April 1988 with the 1444 Westbury to Portsmouth Harbour service.

1988 was a dark year for the class 33s. The Sulzer type 3s lost all of their passenger diagrams, with Cardiff to Portsmouth, Bristol to Taunton and Weymouth, Bournemouth to Weymouth and Reading to Portsmouth all being lost to Sprinter DMUs with the May timetable change. In addition, class 33s ceased working between Waterloo and Salisbury/Gillingham/ Yeovil Junction, albeit in this case being replaced temporarily by the fading class 50s.
