Kirby's Treasure
Just west of the North tower and a 0.80 mile long hike down a dirt road, Kirby Cove has unprecedented views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline falling under the bridges deck. Most of us know of that when you step foot on Kirby Cove you inevitably run into this mysterious looking "wood box". Most of the time people just walk around this to compose their shots or include it sometimes, but my goal was to get something completely different. I wanted to get drama and water splashing on this thing using specific shutter speeds to show motion and movement, so came here three mornings in a row until I got something I was half pleased with. As usual was half soaked when I left.
Getting the shot:
As soon as I get on the beach the shoes come off and pants are rolled up. The water around this time was about 53º,so it's pretty darn cold. Believe it or not there were decent size waves crashing on this thing. I waited several feet back for the wave to crash and then I would run in with my camera (set on the tripod) and quickly compose the shot. It's a little difficult as you have to have your focus and exposure set as well as make sure your horizon is straight and distortion under control, all while water is thrusting up against your tripod. Of course I took a couple practice shots to set my exposure before running in. This is one of my favorite places to shoot..handsdown!!
Thanks for your visit! :)
