Mackie is love

30-minutes from downtown Seattle in the Woodinville hills of Washington State resides Mackie Designs, the third love-child of evil genius, Greg Mackie (TAPCO and AudioControl, being the previous offspring).

As with his previous businesses, Greg &Co. leave an imprint of their wild north-western sensibilities on their products and company culture.

For starters, they design and assemble (in America) a top-notch pro audio product that is built like a tank.

Furthermore, what other company designs user manuals specifically for people (and you know who you are) who never read manuals?

Here are a few samples from the 1202-VLZ3 manual (seriously)...

Page 3 starts with one paragraph under big bold type that commands you, "Read This Page!" then continues...

We realize that you must be dying to try out your new 1202-VLZ3. All we ask is that you read this page NOW, and the rest can wait until you’re good and ready. But do read it — you’ll be glad you did.

Half-way through a careful explanation of Aux 1/2 Send knobs...

Still with us? Good for you. Here come the tricky parts, the output or master section where the mixing is really done. We have even started it on a new page:

And then, two pages further...

Congratulations! You’ve just read about all the features of your 1202-VLZ3. You’re probably ready for a cold one. Go ahead. The rest of the manual can wait.

(Full disclosure: Yes I own two AudioControl EQs and an Mackie mixer.)
