Before the second half of the 18th Century it was common to bury the dead in or around churches. Since 1778 the buriel grounds were placed outside the cities for hygenic reasons. A very innovative idea for that time !
In 1616 Maria van Nassau, princess of The Netherlands was entombed in the St. Lambertus Church in Buren.
