Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey: “I have a lot of things to prove to myself. One is that I can live my life fearlessly”.

Oprah's Angel Network supports charitable projects and provides grants to nonprofit organizations around the world. To date, Oprah's Angel Network has raised more than $51,000,000. In 2005 she became the first black person listed by Business Week as one of America's top 50 most generous philanthropists, having given an estimated $303 million. In 2004, Winfrey and her team filmed an episode of her show, Oprah's Christmas Kindness , in which Winfrey and some crew members traveled to South Africa to bring attention to the plight of young children affected by poverty and AIDS. From that show alone, viewers around the world donated over $7,000,000. Winfrey invested $40 million and some of her time establishing the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls near Johannesburg, South Africa. The school opened in January 2007. Winfrey was named as the '2008 Person of the Year' by animal-rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
