Pence Springs Grand Hotel

Pence Springs started off as a Spring Resort. It closed as a hotel in 1929 when the Depression hit. It became a girl's school for a short period of time. In hard times, it became a women's prison. In harder times, it was abandoned completely. In better times, it was restored and it became a Spring Resort again, which is when I took this picture. It is probably one of the best places I have ever been to in my whole life. The place is beautiful. The grounds were beautiful. Everything was beautiful. The food was fantastic. The service was amazing. The basement bar has a secret passage down to the railway tracks because it used to be a speakeasy. The third floor still had a solitary confinement cell. I spend a lot of time thinking about how great it is and how much I wish I could go back. Alas, it hit bad times again and now is a home for wayward boys, last I checked. A lot of the grounds have been partitioned off and sold separately. It broke my heart! They don't even let people on the grounds anymore. :( I can only hope that someone will turn it back into a hotel again so I can go back. :(

Other info: The animals and Indians frequented the springs here before white settlement. The original 1800s hotel that was built on this site burned in 1912. This hotel replaced it in 1916 and opened in 1918. The water from this spring won 2nd place at the World's Fair in 1904.

One of the best things about this hotel? No TVs in the rooms. :) You have to amuse yourself with books in the library or other pursuits. Only TV was in the bar. Also, there were radios in the rooms, but this is in the middle of nowhere and there was zero reception, haha. :) Most relaxing week I've ever had!
