SPECTACLED REDSTART Myioborus melanocephalus. This Spectacled Redstart was encountered at the Pasochoa Wildlife Refuge in northern Ecuador at 7:54 AM on the bright, sunny morning of April 27, 2017.

The Spectacled Redstart belongs to the family Parulidae (New World Warblers or Wood Warblers) and thrives in the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, and Bolivia.

Some recent authors have referred to members of the genus Myioborus as "Whitestarts" and to this species as the Spectacled Whitestart.

The remarkable Pasochoa Wildlife Refuge is located in northern Ecuador about a one hour drive south of Quito near the small town of Tambillo. After turning left to the east at Tambillo, one drives about 10 minutes to Amaguaña where a right turn and driving past the right side of the Iglesia de Ejido puts you on the road to San Pedro de Pilopata from which one continues uphill to the Pasochoa Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is situated in the semicircular collapsed Pasochoa Volcano. Around 100,000 years ago, the volcano exploded and blew off the western half of the preexisting volcanic cone. The refuge is remarkable for its well preserved native vegetation and is located above a stretch of beautiful pastureland facing the interandean valley to the west.
