FORKED TONGUE • RAINBOW-BEARDED THORNBILL Female Chalcostigma herrani Posing at the Yanacocha Reserve in ECUADOR. Hummingbird Photo by Peter Wendelken.
RAINBOW-BEARDED THORNBILL (hummingbird) Chalcostigma herrani.
This female Rainbow-bearded Thornbill is displaying ITS FORKED TONGUE.
One does not usually see that the tongue is forked when a hummingbird is sticking out its tongue in the air. This female was the second of two seen on this sunny morning. It was observed preening in a tree just outside the east entrance of the first tunnel at the magnificent, high elevation Yanacocha Reserve (elevation 3,400 meters or 11,155 feet) on the northwestern side of Volcán Pichincha west of Quito in northwestern Ecuador on April 6, 2017. The hummingbird stuck out its forked tongue at 11:21 AM.
The Rainbow-bearded Thornbill belongs to the hummingbird family Trochilidae and occurs in the high Andes of Colombia, Ecuador and extreme northern Perú.
