More than a third of people over 50 are too afraid to leave their homes at night because they are afraid of being mugged or verbally abused, according to a new survey.

2. Older women and frail older people are mostsusceptible to fear of crime
3. Fear of crime is associated with reduced social networking outside the home
4. Fear of crime is associated with depression, poor self-reported health and low quality of life.
It is difficult to establish whether fear of crime is acause of poor health and low quality of life,or whether they are linked throughmore complex two-way relationships. For example, fear of crime may increase the risk of depression, but depression itself may heighten susceptibility to fear. It is difficultto separate these effects with the available data, although ongoing multivariate analysisindicates that fear of crime contributesto poor healthin some countries.
