Pictured is an advertisement for A. Fortune and Company, the pre-curser to the Fortune Funeral Home. Started in 1892 by Antoine Fortune, A. Fortune and Company was a furniture store. Like many furniture stores of its time, Fortune doubled as a casket-making shop, as it had the materials and skilled workers necessary to build them. Gradually, the furniture company started offering more funeral services, and finally morphed into a funeral home full-time. Since its founding in 1892, the funeral home has been run by four generations of Fortune men - Antoine Fortune Jr, James Fortune, Andrew Fortune Sr., and Andrew Fortune Jr.
