Auroras are the result of disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by the solar wind. These particles, mainly electrons and protons, precipitate into the upper atmosphere (thermosphere/exosphere). The resulting ionization and excitation of atmospheric constituents emit light of varying color and complexity.
