Children dressed as Ancient Egyptians on Lanimer Day, Lanark, Lanarkshire, 2001
The procession includes other groups in costume, police and silver bands, and on horseback some of the people who have been elected to hold office at the Lanimer's. There is a competiton for the best dressed group.
Lanimer Day is Lanark's summer holiday, held at the beginning of June. It is several hundred years old, with its origin in the checking of the burgh's boundaries, or 'lands'. This is still done, though it was omitted in 2001 because of foot and mouth disease.
