Giang Thi So, Hmong woman on a fogy Cao May street in Sapa.
The Bamboo basket, after the Indigo Blue clothing, is almost a trade mark of the Hmong. It would take an expert two long days to make one. Due to the daily use in all aspect of life and often in the rain, carrying wood, rice, corn, small pigs, food supply… you name it, it only last about 12-18 month. It is an expensive item that cost between $10-18, depending on size. Women will choose one as carefully as a Western woman may choose a dress or a pair of shoes. The last one I got for So, after checking all the shops in Sapa for two days, was on the road at 7:00 am from a basket weaver on his way to the Saturday Hmong market day.
