Afternoon Tea
“High Tea” or “Afternoon Tea” (Low Tea) refers to teatime, but a lot of people misunderstood these terms and use them incorrectly. “High Tea” means the tea served with main meals. At that time, the British had two main meals, breakfast and dinner. Normally, dinner is made up of meats, butter, bread, potatoes, pickles, cheese and the item that can never be missed is tea, of course. All the dishes for dinner were prepared on a table which is high. That is where the word “High Tea” derived from, but many people misunderstood that “High Tea” is the tea for the royal family or aristocrats.
“Afternoon Tea” means the tea served with snacks such as sandwiches, scones or baked items in the afternoon on a small and low table. “Afternoon Tea” tea is a period of social gathering where friends exchange views, which is quite friendly and relaxing, full of joy and leisure of tea drinking. The preparation of tea on a small and low table gave it the name “Low Tea”. Now, it is known as “Afternoon Tea” the time of the day when the tea is served.
