Looking West On W. Main St., Mount Sterling, Illinois
A view of the south side of W. Main Street as seen from Capitol Ave. in the heart of the Mount Sterling Commercial Historic District. The district includes four entire city blocks and parts of four others. Nearly all of the buildings in the district are Italianate commercial buildings; the only exceptions are the Classical Revival former First National Bank building shown on the corner (completed in 1915 and now repurposed as a physical therapy clinic), and the Brown County Courthouse (shown previously), which incorporates both Italianate and Classical Revival elements. The district was added to the NRHP in 1987.
Mount Sterling is the seat of Brown County. The city had a population of 2,006 at the 2020 census.
