W. E. White Building, Stockton, Illinois
The W.E. White Building, seen here on the corner, was constructed in 1897, and is one of many commercial structures erected following a devastating fire in 1886 in downtown Stockton, Illinois. Designed by local architect Peter Schroeder, the building is an example of late 19th century Queen Anne commercial architecture, and stands out as one of the most decorative downtown buildings in Stockton. The W.E. White Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
Stockton is best known as the birthplace of the Kraft Corporation. In 1914, the Kraft Brothers opened a cheese factory in Stockton, and operated it until Kraft sold the facility in 1998. This was the first cheese plant opened by J.L. Kraft.
The Village of Stockton is located approximately 28 miles ESE of Galena, the Jo Daviess County seat. The population of Stockton at the 2020 census was 1,676.
